A foundational read in trauma healing. This book explores how trauma reshapes both the body and brain—and how connection, movement, and body-based therapies can help us recover. It's dense but deeply validating, especially for those who have struggled to find words for what they feel.

This was the book that introduced me to the concept of somatic healing.  I had been in talk therapy for over a decade and while it initially helped, my progress plateaued and it was eventually more harmful than helpful.  Incorporating somatic based healing was a game changer.  I learned how to regulate my nervous system naturally.  Consistent regulation reduced anxiety and irritability.  My ability to regulate my nervous system also led to my kids being calmer and more regulated as well.

"The Myth of Normal" challenges the idea that illness and dysfunction are simply personal failings or genetic misfortunes. Instead, Dr. Gabor Maté argues that much of what we consider 'normal' in modern society—chronic stress, disconnection, and emotional suppression—is actually deeply harmful. Drawing on research and clinical experience, he explores how trauma is woven into our cultural fabric and offers a path toward authentic healing and reconnection.

Gabor Maté is one of my favorite authors when it comes to understanding the nervous system and its impact on our overall health.  I love all of his work!  This book made me think a lot about the society that we live in and how we have created a society that goes against what is natural.  It challenged me to think about the life that I am creating; especially what I am teaching my kids to value.  I read this during a time when my husband was experiencing systems that were potentially neurological in nature and I was searching for answers as to what might be causing his pain.  While it was a bit discouraging that we are living in an environment that goes against nature, it was also encouraging to learn about what we can do to prevent so many common diseases or at least limit the pain.
